Gathering data is easy, finding meaning in it is difficult. As biohackers we are constantly collecting nutrition, exercise, sleep and other health biometrics. The tools required to determine a level of correlation between these different data sources can be overwhelming at first.

Below are two on-line learning sites which offer data science courses. Learning these tools  can help find meaning in biometric data. Each of them are initially free to use with pricing starting at $29 for more access.

  1. DataCamp – Provides a high quality app (iOS and Droid) which can work in off-line mode so it is perfect for learning on the go. Instruction is primarily through brief examples followed by multiple choice questions.
  2. DataQuest – Offers an elegant web console with interactive instruction. DataQuest avoids hours of videos which they believe to not be helpful. Their courses are ideal with detailed sections on data analysis and visualization, probability and statistics and working with large datasets to name a few.

While there are many sites offering data science courses on-line or in person the pricing for these “bootcamps” can quickly reach $1,000’s of $$’s. Some of them even require approval. What I like about DataCamp and DataQuest is that they are both interactive forcing you to constantly read carefully and provide correct answers. Most of the free courses are video based which makes it easy to get distracted thus missing important lessons.
