It seems regulators around the world are starting to take notice of the different forms that DIY bio can come in. This story is coming in on the coat tails of David Ishee’s Dalmatian breeding work. The German governments protection office has recently issued a statement summarized with:

“Any science enthusiast doing genetic engineering outside of a licensed facility, it wrote, might face a fine of €50,000 or up to three years in prison.”

The arrival of cheap DIY genetic engineering kits from companies like The Odin and Amino Labs have made DNA experimentation accessible to all.
