Justin Atkin shows us that it is possible to separate cells from organic materials. The above photo is brocolli and below a strawberry that have been decellularized. The photos are striking, but even more interesting is the applications. He suggests that the deceullarized materials could be freeze dried, powdered and possibly used for 3D bioprinting. The same mad scientists also has some thoughts on transdermal implants being less susceptible to infection through the use of decellularized tissues.

How does one start experimenting with decellularization? Simply freeze a fruit or vegetable, submerge in a 2% solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and “watch the life drain out” (bottom left corner).
