The latest Smart Drug Smarts podcast discusses a study that was released early this year linking poorer memory to being overweight. Dr. Lucy Cheke of Cambridge summarizes  “In other words, it is possible that becoming overweight may make it harder to keep track of what and how much you have eaten, potentially making you more likely to overeat.”.

It is important to point out that there are three types of memory. This study is focused on episodic.

  • Episodic memory is the ability to remember your own personal experience and replay previous events.
  • Declarative memory involves remembering facts (for example, “Paris is the capital of France”).
  • Procedural memory is the ability to remember how to do a task, like ride a bike.
